Community groups interested in showcasing and celebrating their cultural heritage with a project or event can apply for a financial boost through the Town of Whittlesea Cultural Heritage Funding Program.

The next cycle of the program is now open and offers grants of up to $ 2,000 to support projects that showcase and celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of the Town of Whittlesea and its residents.

Administrator Peita Duncan said the Cultural Heritage Funding Program was a great opportunity for individuals or groups wishing to share their culture with the community.

“We are so fortunate to have such a diverse community within the Town of Whittlesea,” said Ms. Duncan.

“The closures have limited our ability to celebrate the rich culture our city has to offer, which is why the cultural heritage funding program is particularly important this year.

“We look forward to supporting the community with funding to help kickstart whole new cultural events, as we begin to return to a new normal COVID. “

The funding program has been in existence since 2005, with over 140 successful grants awarded.

Grant recipient Thurka Kalaichelvan of the Tamil Women Intercultural Organization said her group was fortunate to receive the grant for her project, Tamil Cultural Heritage Through Generations. Their 2021 event will feature Tamil language and literature, music, dance and drama, cooking, sports and martial arts and celebrations through workshops and exhibits – subject to COVID restrictions.

Ms Kalaichelvan said it would be difficult for the group to organize such a large event without the support of the Council.

“It’s really good to get financial support from the Council, we can’t collect all the money,” she said.

Other recent recipients include the Al Zahra Community Association, for their social group Super Ladies for Islamic Women, and the Elia Language School in Epping for a traditional Iranian New Year (Nowruz) celebration.
