Fairfax County School Board Announces National Superintendent of the Year as Next Leader

The Fairfax County School Board has voted to appoint Michelle Reid, Ed.D., as the next Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent.

Dr. Michelle Reid

Dr. Reid is known regionally and nationally for his strong educational leadership. She was named AASA National Superintendent of the Year in 2021 for his exemplary communications, work to close achievement gaps, and lead his former school system into uncharted territory at the start of the pandemic.

She was praised for her early response to the pandemic; its creativity in successfully responding to student needs; his work on equity; strength in personal and organizational communication; and understanding of regional, national and international issues. Dr. Reid is also known for leading strong community engagement to ensure all stakeholders, including students, have a voice.

“Everyone has lived experience,” Dr. Reid said. “When you walk in iniquity, you have lost the moral authority to lead. I am committed to listening and learning from this community so that together we can build on the strengths of Fairfax County Public Schools while by developing the schools of the future, not those of the past.

With a background in STEM, Dr. Reid has a proven track record of improving math and science skills, but also believes that success in these subjects does not happen without equally strong literacy skills.

Dr. Reid’s commitment to increasing access, opportunity, and equity for all students in public education led to the creation of Northshore’s Department of Racial and Educational Justice. She is committed to bringing this mindset of equity to her leadership of FCPS and will focus on ensuring that every student has access and the opportunity to reach their greatest potential. During her tenure, she oversaw increased graduation rates for all students – especially English language learners.

“Dr. Reid is focused on the academic success and achievement of every student in our Fairfax community. She has already demonstrated the highest professional standards when it comes to leading a school district and a proven track record of to build a prosperous future for students. We are thrilled to have her with us and look forward to working closely with her,” said Stella Pekarsky, Fairfax County School Board Chair and District Representative for Sully.

Dr. Reid has served as superintendent of the Northshore, Washington School District since 2016 – a school district considered the gold standard in Washington State. She previously served as superintendent of the South Kitsap School District in Port Orchard, Washington. Prior to becoming superintendent of South Kitsap, she served as assistant superintendent, district athletic director, and high school principal in the Port Angeles, Washington School District.

Dr. Reid earned his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Washington, his Masters in Educational Administration from the University of Washington, and his BS in Natural Science/Chemistry from the University of Puget Sound.

Fairfax County Public Schools is the 11th largest school district in the United States, with 199 schools and centers; 180,000 students; and 25,000 full-time employees.
