Intento, in collaboration with e2f, publishes the State of Machine Translation 2022

San Francisco, California, September 1, 2022 – Today, Intento, the leading AI integration platform and source of expertise for the AI and localization industries, shares its highly anticipated Status Report machine translation for the sixth consecutive year.

The report gives those working in and around the MT landscape a holistic understanding of current vendors through in-depth analysis and the best strategies to leverage their offerings successfully. The 2022 edition is available for download here.

Among the 31 machine translation engines evaluated this year, Intento experts identified 16 leaders for 11 language pairs in 9 domains in the report. Other takeaways include:

  • Four other vendors have offered pre-trained MT models since the 2021 MT Report, and several open-source pre-trained MT engines are available. We evaluated 31 MT engines, including Meta AI’s NLLB which has just been released to the public.
  • Many engines work best with English to Spanish and Chinese. Legal, financial, IT and healthcare services require careful choice of machine translation vendors, as relatively few operate at the highest level.
  • Although they have several comparable machine translation engines per language pair, fun and colloquial show relatively low scores, which may indicate the importance of personalization in these areas.

The state of the MT landscape is constantly changing, and Intento’s detailed report also highlights the changes the discussed providers have undergone since the 2021 assessment. Readers will have access to a transparent price comparison, as well as a breakdown of the “best TMs by sector”.

Intento’s insights are data-driven, using COMET to determine how well certain engines process different samples of content across multiple domains. COMET was chosen from 6 measures for best correlation with human translation, as COMET showed the best correlation with human judgment for most language pairs.

Companies of all sizes and in all industries can benefit from this information, regardless of the type of content or business applications desired.

“We released our first MT report in 2017, when all you could get quickly was stock models from nine MT providers. Five years later, we see six times more MT platforms available, 10 times more pairs of languages, about the same x200 price difference, and new automated customization possibilities such as domain adaptation and custom glossaries,” says Konstantin Savenkov, CEO and co-founder of Intento. is just the beginning of the Cambrian explosion of machine translation technology, fueled by the need for global companies to work in a distributed way, being inclusive for all their partners, employees and communities with their native languages.”

This year’s report was produced in collaboration with e2f, the go-to communications platform for data collection services, AI data annotation, content and audio translation, and linguistic datasets. “We are delighted to extend our expertise to generate outstanding MT assessment results in the latest Intento report. e2f continues to be a trusted partner across the industry as our datasets drive superior AI for our clients,” said Michel Lopez, CEO of e2f. He continues: “The caliber of our lingosets (golden datasets) is backed by a talented force of translators and data scientists who have enabled e2f to partner with some of the best players in the localization and the AI. As a result, companies are reaching a new standard of excellence for conversational AI. »
