Leavenworth, Kansas – Col. (US Army, retired) John F. Orndorff died at his home on July 30, 2021. John was born in Nashville, TN on August 12, 1937, the eldest son of Helen Rivers Morrow and Franklin Asbury Orndorff. He is survived by his loving and beloved wife of 61 years, Alison S. Orndorff, of the house they were married in West Point, NY in June 1960, in the West Point Catholic Chapel. The survivors are his daughter, Paige V. Roberts, and his brother Christopher Orndorff. Other survivors include sister-in-law, Carla P. Meyer; brother-in-law, Kenneth Parkin (Robin) and family; grandsons Luke and Joseph Visocsky (Andrea) and family; niece Gina Gould Bruce (Nathan); nephews Father Christopher M. Orndorff II; Matthew Orndorff (Angela) and his family and Spencer Gould (AJ) and his family. His son, John Jr., died before him in 2015.
John grew up in Adairville, KY, and attended elementary and secondary schools there. He was appointed to the US Military Academy at West Point by Congressman William H. Natcher of KY in 1955, graduating in 1959. Commissioned in the infantry by choice, he completed the Basic Course in infantry officer, Airborne, Ranger and Jumpmaster schools and served with the 101st Airborne Division. Subsequently, he attended Army Language School (Korean), Advanced Infantry Officer Course, Military Assistance Training Advisor Course, Special Forces Officer Course, the Armed Forces Staff College and the Army War College. He was a veteran of Vietnam and several other parts of Asia, including the command of the 3rd Brigade (Front Line), 2nd Infantry Division on and in the Korean Demilitarized Zone. John was very fond of leading soldiers and he was fortunate enough to do so at the platoon, company, battalion and brigade level. His last assignments at Fort Leavenworth included that of Director of the Staff School of Combined Arms and Services; Director, Department of Tactics, Command and General Staff College; Deputy Deputy Commander, CGSC. John retired from the military after 27 years of service on May 31, 1986.
After retiring from the military, John joined the Armed Forces Insurance (AFI) staff at Fort Leavenworth in August 1986. He was instrumental in obtaining AFI licensing in all 50 states and the United States. launch of auto insurance issuance by the company. He was appointed Executive Vice President in 1991 and served as Chairman and Chairman of the Board at the end of 1992, holding these positions until his retirement in 1998.
Upon true retirement, John served as a volunteer with the Leavenworth County Development Corporation and as the Leavenworth County representative on the Johnson-Leavenworth-Wyandotte Workforce Development Board. He continued to pursue his love of hunting and fishing, gardening and golf, becoming semi-famous for winning both a car and a van by knocking the hole out of the prize hole. 2001 member of the Leavenworth Country Club.
